The Sad Closure of a Beloved Local Institution: The Story of Tatnuck Meat and Seafood

Tatnuck Meat & Seafood shuts its doors in Worcester after half a century

Harvey Slarskey founded the store as Tatnuck Meats Market when he was in his 30s, after working in the cattle business. Over the next 40 years, the store became known for its high-quality products and customer service, with Slarskey building relationships with customers on a first-name basis.

In 2011, the store added seafood to its name and product offerings, expanding to include fish and other types of seafood. Slarskey was dedicated to his business, often arriving at work hours before the store opened to ensure the quality of the products. He stressed the importance of quality over quantity and was proud of the few complaints the store had received over its 40 years of operation.

However, despite their success, business began to decline as the neighborhood changed over time. Michael Slarskey stepped in to help with the business three years ago as his father’s health declined and eventually made the difficult decision to close due to declining business and health issues faced by longtime owner Harvey Slarskey.

Tatnuck Meat and Seafood was known for offering a wide range of meats and seafood options, catering mostly to customers in nearby areas such as Worcester’s Tatnuck neighborhood. However, as time passed, it became apparent that these options were no longer meeting customer needs or preferences. This led Michael to explore new opportunities for growth beyond their current offerings.

As one of their last acts before closing down permanently, Michael expressed gratitude to their customers over the years and acknowledged that 50 years in business is quite an accomplishment. The closing of this beloved local institution marks an end
